In the meantime, pauses and periods of silence demonstrate that you're not just producing whatever content you have in your mind but a clearly thought out answer is in the pipeline. You can prepare someone who is expecting to answer you by asking "Let me think about it ..., Let me take a look." ..". This way, the person will not have to sit in silence thinking that you didn't hear that you're ignoring etc. Think through your thoughts and you'll be able to come up with statements that you will not regret about later. You can determine the best method to reply with wisdom without leaving cuts or wounds.
