Keep in mind that the goal of answering questions is to be a positive contributor to the one who is seeking an answer. Don't take time. Seek understanding first.

Another way to boost your chances of responding to an inquiry in a pertinent and objective manner is when you give the person who is asking you the question to finish asking. Some people take their time to elaborate on what they want to know. The answer to a query before it is answered fully could appear to be disrespectful. Don't presume you have a clear idea of where the query is heading and thus you must assist the individual to understand the question. If you're able allow the person to "ramble" while you make note of the key aspects. It will also allow you time to organize and think of what is the best way to answer the question. The ability to listen will give you a high percentage of success in answering questions.

You must determine if you're competent to answer the issue or is someone else. If you are not authorized, can you speak about this subject (journalists are able to haunt you even if you're supposed to be a spokesperson of the company)? How long should your answer be? A few moments of silence indicate that you aren't just making up whatever material you have in your mind, but a reasoned out answer is on its way. You can actually prepare the person who is waiting for to answer you by asking "Let me think about it ..., Let me look around." ..". That way the person does take a break from thinking that you didn't hear and you're just ignoring etc. Thinking about the situation also allows you to come up with statements that you won't regret over later. You can figure out the best solution to make your point without leaving the person with injuries or wounds that are not healed.
