A question is one asking for a answer or answer. On a daily basis, you are able to be asked questions. Some questions are open-ended with the need for explanation, explanation and many more. Other questions are closed requiring just either a "Yes" or "No. In certain situations, others pose questions that don't necessarily need a response, but are simply to be heard (rhetoric question). The format or question being asked, the answer which follows must answer what they are looking for in the first place. Most students fail in their exams not because they're dull however, they fail to know what the question is asking to them. Inability to explain the question correctly will result in an incorrect decision or response. After an event, you will feel satisfied when people question you. It may be a sign you were able to keep people engaged during your presentation and the presentation has arouse interest among others. The way you handle those questions will improve the perception of your audience of you or increase their confidence in the quality of your product or services. As a professional you will be required to master what it takes to be able to answer pertinent questions but most importantly how to effectively respond to questions.

Before you dive into answering the question, make sure you have a clear mind about what the question is. It is not a bad idea to start by looking for clarity about the question being asked. Inquire politely "I apologize, you don't seem to comprehend what you're asking If you could rephrase the question, what would you suggest?" Your communication will be better at this point than shouting at the top of your lungs with no clarity or understanding. Remember that the point of answering questions is give a meaningful contribution to the one who is looking for an answer. Do not waste your time. Seek understanding first.

One way that can enhance your effectiveness in answering your question in an accurate and objective way is if you give the person asking the question to finish asking. A few people take time to define exactly what they want to know. When you respond to a question without knowing what is properly asked might seem rude. Don't think you know where the questions are taking and therefore want to help the person get straight to the point. If you have time you can let the person "ramble" while taking notes of important factors. It will also allow you time to make sense of and consider the most effective answer to the question. The ability to listen will give an excellent chance to succeed in answering the questions.

It is up to you to determine if you are competent to answer the question or whether someone else is. Do you have the authority to speak on the subject (journalists can make you look bad even if you are not supposed to be a company's spokesperson)? How long should your answer be? It is important to take a break and show that you are not just churning out any raw material you can think of in your mind but a clearly thought out solution is coming. You can actually help the person waiting for to answer you by asking "Let me think ..., Let me look around." ..". This way, the person will do not just sit and think that you didn't hear and you're just ignoring or not paying attention. Being able to think through the issue helps in coming up with suggestions which you'll regret over later. You will be able to determine the best option to speak with confidence without leaving the person with the marks of a wound or fresh ones.
