Before you plunge into answering an inquiry, ensure that you're in the clearest of your mind what the question is about. It is not a bad idea to start by getting clarity on what's being asked. Inquire politely "I am sorry, I don't seem to understand what you are asking Could you please clarify?" It is easier to communicate by doing this rather than you can simply talk about the topic with little sense of clarity and understanding. Remember that the reason for answering questions is to be a positive contributor to the person seeking answers. Don't waste your time. Seek understanding first.

One strategy to increase your efficiency in responding to your question in an accurate and objective manner is if you give the person asking the question to finish asking. Some people take their time to describe precisely what they want to convey. Responding to a question after it is answered fully could appear as if you're being disrespectful. Don't assume that you are aware of where the question is taking, therefore you wish to help the person to understand the question. You should determine if you're qualified to answer that question or someone else is. Do you have the authority to talk about this topic (journalists could be a source of trouble even when you're not supposed to be a company spokesperson)? What is the depth of your answer be? In the meantime, pauses and periods of silence indicate that you aren't just creating whatever content you have in your mind but a clearly thought out solution is coming. You can actually make sure that the person you are expecting to hear to answer you by telling them "Let me think ..., Let me think." ..". This will help the person stop waiting around, thinking the person hasn't heard anything or you're just not listening, your own thoughts. The process of thinking through can help you to come up with statements which you'll not regret over later. You can assess the best option to speak with confidence without leaving bruises or fresh wounds.
