One technique that will increase your effectiveness in answering a question in a relevant and objective way is if you give the person who is asking the question to finish asking. Some people like to explain precisely what they are looking for. The answer to a query before it is clearly asked for can be disrespectful. Don't presume you have a clear idea of where the question is going hence you should assist the person reach the goal. If you have time leave the person "ramble" while you take note of the most important details. It gives you the time to synthesize and think of your best solution to the question. The ability to listen will give you a high success rate in your answering of questions.

It is up to you to determine if you're qualified to answer the question , or if someone else is. If you are not authorized, can you talk about the subject (journalists have the power to make you feel uncomfortable even if you are not intended to be company spokesperson)? How deep should the answer be? The pauses and silences indicate that you aren't just churning through whatever substance you've got in your mind, but a planned answer is expected. It is possible to prepare someone who is expecting to answer you by asking "Let me think about it ..., Let me consider it." ..". This way, the person will not sit there and think the person hasn't heard anything, you are simply ignoring your own thoughts. Being able to think through the issue helps to think of statements which you'll not regret in the future. You can assess the best way to present your argument with wisdom without leaving injuries or wounds that are not healed.
