The word "question" refers to a statement which asks for a response or answer. On a daily basis, people are asked to ask questions. Certain questions are open ended that require explanation, clarification and the like, while others need only an answer of a yes or no. In certain situations, others pose questions that don't necessarily require a response but just for someone to take note of (rhetoric types of questions). In the case to the problem, any response that follows should address what they are looking for in the first place. Many students fail their tests not because they are dull and uninterested but because they are unable to understand the questions being asked of them. Failure to answer the question correctly can lead to a wrong action or response. After a presentation, you must be happy when people inquire about your presentation. It may be a sign that the audience was engaged with this presentation and also that the presentation sparked interest in other people. How you answer those questions will improve the perception of your audience on you or increase their confidence about your product or service. As a professional, you'll have to master how to ask pertinent questions . But most importantly, you need to know how be able to answer them effectively.

Before you decide to answer the question, make sure it is clear in your mind about what the question is. There's no harm in finding out the reason for the question being asked. If you are asked politely "I apologize, I do not seem to know what you're trying to say I would appreciate if you could clarify?" It's better to be more concise by doing this rather than being unable to speak with clarity or understanding. Be aware that the main purpose of answering questions is for you to provide a valuable contribution to the person seeking an answer. Don't take time. Seek understanding first.

One technique that will increase your ability to answer the question in a timely and objective way is if you allow the person asking the question enough time to finish asking. Some people may take their time to define exactly what they want to know. When you respond to a question without knowing what is asked in full may appear insensitive. Don't believe that you know what direction the questions are taking and therefore wish to help the person get straight to the point. If you're in a hurry then let the individual "ramble" while you record key things. Also, it gives you time to gather your thoughts and determine which answer is best to the question. The ability to hear gives you a high success rate with regards to your answers to questions.

It is your responsibility to determine whether you're competent to answer the issue or is someone else. Do you have the authority to speak on this topic (journalists can make you vulnerable even if you're expected to be the company spokesperson)? What should the response be? In the meantime, pauses and periods of silence will show that you're just creating whatever material is in your mind but a clearly reasoned out answer is on its way. You can prepare the person in the audience for an answer by saying "Let me think ..., Let me know." ..". The person will not sit and wait thinking you've missed something it, or that you're not paying attention, your own thoughts. Thinking about the situation also allows you to formulate statements that you'll not be regretting for later. You can determine the best way to present your argument with wisdom without leaving the person with bruises or fresh wounds.
