A question is an expression which seeks a response or an answer. On a regular basis, you may get asked questions. Some questions a open ended needing explanation, explanation, and so on while other questions are closed requiring just to answer with a Yes or No. Sometimes, people ask questions that don't necessarily call for a response, but rather for someone to listen to (rhetoric inquiries). Depending on the structure that the questions are asked, your response that follows must be in line with what you are trying to find in the question. Many students fail their exams not because they're boring and uninterested but because they are unable to understand the questions being asked to them. Inability to communicate the question properly leads to an incorrect action or response. After your presentation, you need to be content if people ask you questions. It may be a sign that the audience was engaged with your presentation and that the presentation has arouse interest among others. How you respond to questions will increase the view of your audience about you or improve their confidence in your products or service. As a professional you will need to master questions and ask pertinent questions and, most importantly, to respond effectively.

Before you jump into answering to a question make sure you have a clear mind what the question is about. It is not a bad idea to start by seeking clarity over what is being asked. Try asking politely "I am sorry, I'm not sure if I be able to comprehend what you're asking I would appreciate if you could clarify?" Your communication will be better at this point than simply talking about it with no discernment or clarity. Remember that the primary goal of answering questions is for you to provide a valuable contribution to the one who is looking for an answer. Do not waste your time. Seek understanding first.

A way to increase the effectiveness of answering the question in a timely and objective manner is if you give the person posing the question time before asking. Some people take time in describing precisely what want to know. If you answer a question before it has been fully addressed may be irresponsible. It is not a good idea to assume you know what direction the questions are taking and therefore wish to help the person with the right answer. If you're having time, let the person "ramble" while you make note of the key aspects. This also allows you time to think through and formulate how to best respond to the question. Your ability to listen is what gives an excellent chance to succeed in your answering of questions.

You need to decide if you're qualified to answer the question or whether someone else is. If you are not authorized, can you speak about this subject (journalists can be very threatening even though you're not suppose to be the spokesperson of the company)? How deep should the answer be? Pauses and moments of silence ensure that you're just churning up any materials you have in your mind but a clearly thought through answer is coming. You can actually prepare someone for an answer by declaring "Let me think ..., Let me think." ..". This way the person is not sit around thinking they haven't heard or you're just not listening,, etc. Being able to think through the issue helps to think of statements that you will not regret over later. You can determine the best way to present your argument with wisdom without leaving the person with injuries or wounds that are not healed.
